Choosing a busy book for a 3 year old
By three, many kids are ready for activities that ask a little more of them than a board book: matching a piece to its shadow, counting a few objects, or following a dotted line with a marker. A busy book puts lots of those in one place, so there's always another page to try.
Activities that suit a 3 year old
- Matching pictures to shadows (animals, fruit, shapes).
- Sorting by colour or shape.
- Counting small groups, roughly 1 to 10.
- Tracing big letters, numbers and simple lines.
- Easy mazes, like leading an animal to its food.
Every child is different, so don't worry if some pages are too easy and others are a stretch. That's part of what keeps a book interesting for longer.
Raising Children Network says children at 3 to 4 years might draw circles or squares, copy some letters by 4, and count up to 4 objects and sort them by colour and shape. (source)
What to check before you buy
- The age on the product. Small pieces are common in books for 3+.
- What it's made of. Laminated card wipes clean and takes markers. Felt is soft but harder to clean.
- How pieces attach. Hook-and-loop dots let pieces come off and go back on.
- Storage. A case or pouch helps stop pieces getting lost.
- How many pages. More pages means more variety before it feels "done".
Keeping pieces from going missing
Keep a pouch or case with the book, and make "pieces back in the book" part of finishing. Spare dots help too, because a few always end up somewhere odd.
